Arthritis

Arthritis means 'joint inflammation'. There are over 100 rheumatic diseases and other conditions that cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints. To keep it simple there are two basic types that you will hear about:

Osteoarthritis: Wear and tear of joints which we all get but to various degrees depending on how we have abused or looked after certain joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis which affects not just joints but many other structures such as skin, eyes & internal organs.

Causes are not definitely known, but for some reason the body detects these affected joints as foreign, and attacks itself. It varies greatly among people. Some have periods of remission, one off attacks, or maybe years of attacks. Others are significantly debilitated.
